The KTV-2 years

Those were the days when all you had by way of Western entertainment on telly was KTV-2 and if you were lucky and the reception caught on, Dubai Channel 33 and Channel 55 from Bahrein. The lure of Dubai and all things Dubai-an was as intense and pronounced then as it is now. Still remember all those Friday shows on KTV the likes of Mr. West, Omar Al Mukhtar, Big League Soccer, the Paper Chase, Falcon Crest and the  Take 2  magazine show by Keith and Sarah Welles. Back then, there was limited choice but life was uncomplicated and watching state sponsored television with zero commercial breaks, which we now all of us take as a given; considered desirable. Even what few ads there were back then exuded more class and elegance than today’s lot: cue the Christoffle ad, Joy by Jean Patou or even, the La Vache Qui Rit or Chai Wazzan ads.

 I especially miss KTV anchors; Ms. Basma Rayees,Talal Yacout and the Xaverite- Adeeb Shuwaiber who I thought were all right up there with the Natalie Magnaldies and Omar Buttis of Dubai One TV.

As for wrestling, we never really were huge fans of this pseudo-sport which had something of a cult following in Kuwait. Had trouble understanding how people could stand watching this vile and gory sport after having performed Friday prayers the very same afternoon. But to each his own, I suppose it takes all kinds to make this world a vibrant interesting place.

If you could wish back into existence just the one thing from the good ol’ Kuwait of the 70s and 80s what would it be?  

I am not telling you my wish (XOXOXO Dempsey, ouch!). Suffice it to say, I won’t be rooting for my Arabic language school teachers from Hell, and you can say that again and again and yet again.
