Surviving the Taj

This holiday season saw me hopping right across the length and breadth of India doing the tourist beat soaking in many a heritage sites, national parks, caves, temples, rave parties and yes, the Taj Mahal. It was only my third time visiting the Taj but Taj by the night was a first both for me and my significant other - Yilmaz. He more than I was much enthused about ringing in the new year over fireworks, a sparkling Dom Perignon and the majestic splendor of the Taj for a backdrop. Over the years I have grown most fond of Islamic architecture and everywhere I go I like to bring home with me a piece of that brilliance caught in a painting, a ceramic, an artwork on silk or in the case of the Taj; a marble replica. So you can imagine how I was feeling every bit the Alex in Wonderland up until that fateful morning of the 2nd of January when a little biopic on Emperor Shah Jehan fell into my lap in the hotel lounge. I remember coming back to my room a profoundly perturbed man , with an uneasy feeling under my diaphragm that refuses to go away even now. Had I just been dropped a lemon or was it the real McCoy ? For the life of me, I cannot surmise how it had escaped me that Moghul emperor – Shah Jehan had built the Taj as mausoleum for his favourite wife, Noor Jehan whom he had lost during her ninth confinement only. Holy Moly! Here was a man whose lust for his wife was probably far greater than his love of her. Sounds familiar, innit ? Even if some part of him may have truly loved her , boy, he sure had a warped way of showing it by first siring a brood of nine and then going on to build her a memorial to try and make it up to her in the after life. What a cheapskate! Indians have made much hullabaloo over the Taj winning top place in the official list of the Seven Wonders of the World but little if any, thought seems to have been spared to the story behind the making of the Taj Mahal, with all the labour pains that lay frozen in time, in the many marble archways and minarets of this world heritage site. It is out of character for me to rubbish what is essentially a piece of stunning Islamic architecture but I cannot not abhor the man who required it built . To me, as I am sure for many others, the means are just as important as the ends. Is the Taj then truly deserving of top spot among the Seven Wonders given its sordid history? National and global pride aside, why must we celebrate that which stinks of lust, an inability to zip up the fly, arrogance and ingratitude ; the very things that receive the most flak from every civilized quarter today.
Legend has it that Shah Jehan who was a sucker for the Wahaabi way ordered the chopping off of fingers and limbs of all the artisans and craftsmen who had worked their magic in creating the Taj . That this dude was at the end of his rope from the time of his conception right till the time he kicked the bucket, there’s no doubting that.
Cynics would argue, we are only celebrating here the Taj as a monument , an architectural icon saluting the handiwork of those who helped realize it. But to my mind the Taj will always remain shrouded in pain and agony as much as in grief and loss. On balance, the very least, the international community can do is to urge the sovereign of India to drape the monument in black on International Women's Day (IWD) in solidarity and support of the grand multiparous woman everywhere. After all, much too much water has now flown under the bridge that we can no longer sweep such an ignonimous piece of royal wife battery through relentless procreation, under the carpet.

I was half expecting to see an entry on "Surviving the Raj" for some time now but as for Taj frankly, I didn't see it coming at all. While most people when you talk to them about it equate Surviving the Taj with Agra belly and anti-diarrhoeals or even unscrupulous fly by night operators and tricksters, the present post is taking potshots at historic figures giving wide berth ( wider than Jebel Ali) to historic facts and events.
Are we certain that Emperor Shah Jehan had more than just one wife?? For one thing, they say he was a broken man after the death of his Noor Jehan and refused to marry again.
Giving credit where it's due while the cause of the grand multiparous woman is a laudable one don't let's drag star crossed lovers into the vortex of a female lib maelstrom.Btw the Taj still manages to knock my socks off at the ripe old age of 95.
How many of us can be certain beyond the shadow of a doubt we were not an outcome of a marital rape?
That itself is telling on how little choice and autonomy most women ( including those in the West ) have in bed exercising their right to say no to their husbands to having unprotected sex with them for the purpose of conception.
In short order, a very large percentage of women everywhere have child bearing forced on them. It takes close to two years for a woman to fully recover her hemoglobin levels to status quo following a delivery and all men should at least, bear this mind before they unilaterally decide on unleashing entire soccer teams into their households.
Living in a predominantly Jordanian/ Palestinian neighborhood in Kuwait all of my wonder years has done more to f**k up my sexuality than any other thing I have come in contact with. Sexuality is experiential and seeing all those extra extra large families my neighbors had with new additions being made each season caused me to develop a revulsion for having children of my own someday and led to an intense attraction which I feel for Marlboro men, in general who tend to be impotent.
So you're not totally off the mark in seeking redress for the much spent woman. Frequent child births with inadequate spacing between the kids not only ruins a woman's physical and mental health but it can affect neighbors' sexuality too and that is something to think about for the anti-contraception pro birth literalists amongst us.
Thank y'all for your leaving behind your intellectual seed on my blog.
Krazy - I wonder if this is why there's always such a strong wave of latent homosexuality blowing over the Levant.
:)
I am guessing, an anti-dote against excess procreation would be to involve more men in the labour suites with their wives. The law must require husbands to support their wives during all stages of labour; a point which needs belabouring in places such as Turkey, Kuwait, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Saudi. When men see first hand what women have to go through during labour they will be more willing for vasectomies and/or to embrace contraception.
Thanks for visiting Life in a ....etc. It lead me to you! Good reading, I shall return.
I'm sorry to tell you this, guys, and I am a feminist, but having children isn't that bad. If you are married to a rich man and have help around to clean and prepare meals, if you are surrounded by family who help out, many women, smart women, love having children.
The pain is but a moment, honest. We love our children, each and every one! Why not accept this tribute of love as just what it is?
Ahlen ya slartybarty!
So are we liking it here -far and away from the eye of the storm ? :)
intl dear :
I am NOT saying having kids is a horrible thing. Far from it - children cement ties between partners, be they straight or otherwise. My only gripe is with people who procreate under peer pressure, of keeping up with the Kanawatis, so to speak. Women are not ( how do I put it ) 'designed' to bear more than 4 children. 5 and more pregnancies, or fewer with inadequate spacing of less than 2 years between successive ones can lead to serious complications during pregnancy and child-birth ( prolapse uterus, urinary incontinence, cardiac failure etc). At the end of the day this is an individual, and it is to be hoped a consensual choice between man and wife or between two gay partners and a surrogate mother. Further, I am sorry but I disagree with you on the one main point which you make : no matter how rich and supportive your hubby may be, and no matter how great your support structure is at home or at work, bearing children taking them through 9 months of pregnancy and between 9 - 36 hours of labour is no child's play. Not something you would recommend to the faint hearted. As my chief likes to put it - " Having children is about 5 minutes of intense pleasure and a lifetime of misery and pain."
On the Taj there's still no escaping the fact that here is a monument which celebrates lust masquerading as love. Whether we like it or not, a table is a table - the Moghul emperor did her in!
I just totally do not agree. You probably are right medically, I have no expertise there. I have had a couple friends with 12 kids each, and DAMN - they are healthier, thinner, happier than most women I know! And somehow, they manage to give each child individual time, too.
I love the idea of a man missing his mate (what if it had been a guy??) so much he built such an exquisite monument. YOU are NOT going to spoil this for me!

I am glad we can find something at last to disagree on, and how amicably well!:)
Maybe the three of us - Adventure Man, you and me should get together sometime for a cuppa at Fauchon du thé where we could publicly defend or rubbish, what is essentially a very private matter of spawning. What say ? Oops, I forget - would you much rather we met over a shot of Americano instead of chai?
:)
Going green is another option that has so far skipped this discussion. After burning our own biological fuel through procreation once twice or maybe, even thrice ( for the insatiable among us) adoption from the world's orphanages could easily be the way forward to satisfying our hunger for having more and more children under our dominion. If you ask me, I think you will find a very large number of young married women everywhere who'd want to finish off having children as soon as, and be done with raising a family. That way they get more time to themselves - to travel, to read, to grow as an individual and above all, to enjoy life while still young & menstruating. More than anything else it is religious and cultural pressure which drives many individuals to make reproductive choices they know are not the best fit for them or their partner, or for that matter for anybody else. Nevertheless; men will be women and they succumb to such emotional blackmail and what have you.
Beace as always,

People championing the cause of 3XLarge sized families, are quick to point out to cradle-to-grave welfare societies where size doesn't matter monetarily. But I think it's more than a question of suiting your wallet. Parents need to invest a great deal of their time, energy, effort ( and money in that order,) in bringing up children : a point, that's sadly lost on so many of today's yuppies who like to delegate parenting to live-in governesses, or to elitist residential schooling for their kiddies.
Did you know there is a direct correlation with educating women and falling family sizes?
As for sitting down over a cuppa - hmmmm, I noticed you included AdventureMan. HANDS OFF, BL!! MOVE AWAY FROM THE MAN! MOVE AWAY FROM THE MAN! This one is taken!
Honestly, I had never thought of Adventure man in those terms before. Why, oh why, must you give me such ideas, intlxpatr?!
Just wanted to make you laugh, BL
