The Colour Vitiligo

Vitiligo is an enigma; an enigma that won't de-enigmatise so easily, and for oh-so obvious reasons. Variegated looks and the variegated company which one may keep have always met with raised eye brows no matter what the place or the era you are in.
Vitiligo as equal opportunities' disease can afffect anybody, at any age, anywhere.
It is widely held the fear of cancer is in the fear of dying; the fear of vitiligo is in the fear of living. We humans make sure of that.
Vitiligo has no definite proven cause -a genetic basis is only one of numerous theories which keep coming and going out of fashion. And yet(armed with almost zero knowledge of the condition) at some level we all regard this to be 'l'enfant terrible' of the thousand and one diseases there are, to the point of shunning and avoiding all forms of social and or intimate contact with these individuals.

How sad is that, especially, when you stop to think how eagerly sought after is white or light skin in most Eastern societies?! Our fixation; on finely chiseled looks, that 10/10 symmetry of face and evenly toned skin as the only parameters qualifying 'Beauty', is TOTAL beyond belief that we are prepared to make easy pariahs out of anyone who fails to make the cut.
Sad but true. Spare a thought to those men and women with Vitiligo for whom we have made life simply not worth living!
(we owe this entry to the brave men and women who gave us, "Nital" - the Film. Long may your tribe flourish!).

Hey:

Relax, it is all good(as long as you don't make IIM placements and romancing of the IITs the raison d'etre of your blog, unlike some). Just kidding!

I decided to go with vitiligo instead of discolouration because, to my bleached mind, the word 'discolouration' can only sit well when used to describing "a too posh to push brigade" of evening socialites who likes to shock and awe with layers of non-animal tested natural make-up(whatever that is) that they've applied and re-applied. :)
These days except for the HBR there's hardly anything worthwhile on my bedside table. But once I come out of the listless phase I am going through, I hope to have Ian McEwan's "Saturday" and Steven Pinker's "The Blank Slate"(and in no particular order) on my reading list or rather on my night table.
The last great read of mine was Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" which I thought was wickedly funny.

you write this post two years ago. And it is very upto date and precise acording to the time when it is posted. Now there are many health orgs working on vitiligo. As for as concern with the cause of vitiligo vitiligo society and nation foundation two health organization suggest that it is a abnormality of our auto immune system and a gene NLAP1 is responsible for vitiligo. I agree with you that it is theory and not 100% right but many other researcher voted in the favour of this theory like http://www.antivitiligo.com/,vitiligo.org and www.Vitiligo.net etc
and now there are dozen of different procedure apply of Vitiligo treatment
